Welcome to Podcast #8!
About Carly Price
- Environmental Engineer with Master in Engineering Science.
- She is the founder of The Questioning Engineer which focuses on writing skills for engineers.
- ‘Stumbled’ into engineering. Could do science and maths in school fairly easily. But was most interested in geography. Met an environmental engineer at a job fair and realised she could combine everything she was good at with what she loved.
Hot Topic discussion
- If you put out your tenders with the solution already identified, you will always end up with a race to the bottom.
- Engineers leave consulting for a number of reasons – had enough of the race to the bottom, boredom, not being challenged, or not getting the opportunity to do problem solving.
- In the consulting world, there is very little scope for innovation.
- Consultants need to educate their clients.
- The solution needs to come from many directions:
-
- How you structure the business
- The structure of the entire industry
- The business model the clients use – eg PPP structure can work well.
- If the client puts out a request (with consultant assistance) requesting a SOLUTION to a problem, you might end up with a better solution at the end of it.
- Engineers themselves need to start taking some pro-active steps in this area.
- Engineers need to take control of their own professional development
During this podcast, you will also reflect on:
- Loving engineering, because of the people.
- The future of engineering is going to be in the relationships that can built… engineers to go into the client’s company and work directly with the client
- In the future, successful engineering will be dependent upon being able to write succinctly and clearly.
- The culture for engineers is changing, and in 20 years, the value of engineers should have changed.
- The best way to be resilient in your career is to diversify.
- It’s fascinating that water treatment systems can now come in a 20ft container… The fact that what was historically very involved, can now be done in a container that you can take off the shelf and attached to a pipe.
- If engineers stuff up, the ramifications can be huge.

An engineering item for discussion. The Sydney Harbour Bridge or the Pyramids… it’s not so much the structure itself, but the structure in its time. How much people did with the limited resources they had available to them.
An engineer to admire. The engineer Carly met in high school that convinced her to get into Environmental Engineering… Tim McCowen.
