Hot Topic discussion
Aluminium and titanium dioxide is very expensive to produce, Australia finds it hard to compete on a global scale.
It’s an on-going challenge to remain competitive.
A point of differentiation for Australian companies has to be product quality – an example is a smelter Jess worked at that was the only smelter in the world able to make super purity aluminium on the first pass.
A solution should be that Australia niches into being providers of great quality product.. And to learn how to market them well.
Also need to be able to very clearly and concisely explain what we need from overseas producers.
Production in Australia should be encouraged to be on the cutting edge of technology, the leaders in innovation.
During this podcast, you will also reflect on:
Worst part about being an engineer is the paperwork and the processes – Maintenace planning, incident planning… they’re all there for a really good reason and are very important, but sometimes they just feel like they’re going to suck the life out of you.
So satisfied by the problem solving with engineering, and the subsequent fixing of things.
Shutdown management very stressful, but very satisfying in the end.
Think engineers will be a lot more in the design sphere.
The 2 types of engineers – the technical guys (super smart and produce high quality), and the production engineers (good with production and people).
How important it is to assess your manager at job interviews.
An engineering item for discussion.Jess likes looking at the ancient temples… , The Angkor Wat, the Machu Picchu, the Pyramids… the structures they built back then with absolutely nothing… it’s just amazing.
An engineer to admire. Rosalind Hobson – A previous boss of Jess’… Technically brilliant, great communication skills.
